In-building Coverage How To

Site Configuration Tool

In-building Repeater Site Configuration Tool
This site configuration tool allows you to select the repeater, antennas, and connecting cables to suit the desired coverage area of the enclosed space. These selections will determine the signal loss or gain values used when calculating the enclosed coverage area, for the specified outdoor received signal strength entered. (Handset Received Signal Strength) Note: We recommend directional (yagi) antennas for outdoor use.

Step 1
Select an in-building repeater for the in-building system:

XW850 (850 MHz Cellular Band)
XW800i (800 MHz iDEN/SMR Band)
XW1900 (1900 MHz PCS Band)
Step 2
Select the signal strength measured outside the building for the operating band of interest:
(Power in dBm or signal bars on a cellphone)

Note: Bars are a coarse approximation of signal strength. Results will vary with handsets.

rssi bars, or
dBm
Step 3
Select other system components: outdoor antenna (yagi recommended), outdoor cable (outdoor antenna to in-building repeater), indoor cable (in-building repeater to indoor antenna), indoor antenna.

The antennas available are grouped according to which in-building repeater is selected, so that the antenna gain is optimized for the operating band.

Note that the cables to the in-building repeater will require a TNC male connector to mate with the TNC female connectors on the CR series in-building repeater.

Interior Coverage Area
Coverage area depends on a number of factors, including walls and other obstructions inside the building. Unobstructed or free space coverage shows the maximum coverage possible. In most installations, you will obtain typical coverage numbers. Coverage range is for each in-building antenna port, using the antennas and feedline selected in the first section.
